Children and Teens Struggle with Anxiety and Depression

According to the CDC, the percentage of children aged 6–17 who have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression has increased over time. In 2016–2019, 9.4% of children in this age group had diagnosed anxiety, and 4.4% had diagnosed depression.  The child and teen mental health crisis is real!

The stresses faced by children are driven by many factors, including academic pressure, social media, bullying, body image and eating disorders, questions about gender identity, divorce or parent separation, exposure to gun violence, or other trauma.  It is often difficult for children and teens to express how they are feeling to their parents, teachers, or guardians, let alone hearing advice from them!

How Therapy Helps Children and their Parents

Therapy for teens and children can be vital for their well-being. Therapy helps children and teens navigate challenges, build resilience, and develop healthy coping strategies. Importantly, children and teens often have a more open conversation with a trusted therapist rather than with their parents.  And parents often feel that a therapist serves as an unbiased trusted advisor, enabling parents to feel supported.

How To Prepare Your Child or Teen for Therapy

No matter why you are seeking therapy for your child, taking the first step can be intimidating for you and your child. Here are some tips to help you (and your child) prepare for the first therapy session:

  • Be open and honest with your child or teen about why they are going to therapy.
  • You, as the parent or guardian, will meet with the therapist first.
  • Be aware that your child or teen will be meeting with the therapist alone.  This is so that your child can establish an open dialogue and trusted relationship with the therapist.
  • Ensure that your child or teen knows that it may take a few sessions before they will “click” with their therapist.  But if the therapist is not a good fit, don’t be discouraged – that happens! Just call the main office and explain the situation.  Our front office administrator will be happy to schedule your child with someone else.
  • Commit to making sure your child attends all appointments.
