Four Quick Tips To Manage Anger
If you are waiting to attend your court mandated class, or you are considering attending any of these classes voluntarily, here are a few tips to help you manage your anger that you may find helpful.
- Recognize your anger problem. There is no shame in recognizing a problem. Admitting that you have an anger problem is the first step to controlling your intense emotions.
- Monitor your triggers and your actions. Keep an anger journal and log behavior you have observed in yourself or have been accused of by others. Note the incident, trigger, and intensity of your anger from 0 to 10. Often, just seeing your anger on paper will offer insights into where it comes from.
- Feel your anger, but don’t act on your emotions. That doesn’t mean bottling up your emotions. We must feel our feelings, but it’s equally important to regulate our actions. Don’t say angry words that will only make the situation worse, and never resort to getting physical.
- Get help. Speaking with someone about your anger can often help. By uncovering the emotions underneath the anger, you can diffuse it and begin to heal from past traumas.
